Preventing cavities
At hello.smile, we think oral care for children is very important. We focus primarily on preventing cavities and gum disease. From the breaking of the first tooth, feel free to bring your children with you to checkups, so they can get used to the dental chair and be allowed to watch.
Caries has been identified by the WHO (World Health Organization) as the number one behavioral disease for children. Children who learn to take good care of their mouths from an early age will benefit greatly in adulthood.
We recommend that you bring your child to the practice with you at every six-monthly check-up from the time the first teeth start to break. This is purely to allow your child to become familiar with the environment, so that once your child reaches the age where the dentist wants to take a look in the mouth the environment already feels somewhat familiar.
Around this age, your child will also enter the chair by himself for the semi-annual check-up. Counting teeth, possibly looking in the mirror yourself: we will keep this as accessible as possible. If this goes well and permanent teeth have erupted, fluoride will also be given with a brush on the permanent teeth.
Starting at age 6, we like to see your child more frequently for brushing checks. Here, we watch how your child brushes and give constructive advice. We also see if any molars can be sealed. During these appointments, fluoride is given twice a year. All of this is to help prevent your child from getting cavities. It is very nice if you as parents come along to the appointment. This way we can work well together and do whatever is needed for your child together.
Your child is becoming more independent and this sometimes proves to be a period when attention is less on brushing. Brushing when your child has braces is also something we pay attention to. All this to guide your child during this phase of life with the aim of staying cavity free.
What about health insurance?
Prevention, check-ups and dentistry for children up to 18 years of age are covered under the basic health insurance. Therefore, you do not need separate dental insurance for this.
